Customer Code of Conduct Compliance

Your Partner in Meeting Customer-Specific Ethical and Sustainability Requirements

Understanding Customer Code of Conduct Requirements
EcoVadis Sustainability Assessments

In today's global supply chains, medical device manufacturers and their suppliers are increasingly required to demonstrate compliance with customer-specific codes of conduct, ethical standards, and sustainability frameworks. Major customers across the healthcare and life sciences sectors now mandate adherence to their supplier standards as a precondition for doing business. Veritas Quality Solutions provides expert advisory services to help your organization align with these requirements, ensuring you remain a preferred partner in the global supply chain.

Understanding Customer Code of Conduct Requirements

A Customer Code of Conduct is a formal framework established by a buying organization that sets out the minimum standards its suppliers must meet across areas including labour and human rights, environmental practices, ethics, health and safety, and management systems. These codes apply to the selection and retention of all suppliers that provide products or services, and they extend to subcontractors throughout the supply chain.

By trading with major customers, suppliers are expected to accept and apply these standards. Where contractual agreements exist, suppliers are typically required to include clauses that mandate compliance with the customer's Supplier Code of Conduct. Suppliers based in countries with elevated risks of modern slavery and bribery may be required to confirm compliance by completing and returning a formal statement of conformity.

EcoVadis Sustainability Assessments

EcoVadis is one of the world's most widely recognized sustainability rating platforms, with over 150,000 companies assessed across 185 countries and 250 industries. Many major customers now require their suppliers to complete an EcoVadis assessment as part of their supplier qualification and ongoing performance monitoring processes.

How EcoVadis Works

EcoVadis evaluates companies across four core themes:

Environment: Energy consumption, GHG emissions, waste management, materials and chemicals

Labor & Human Rights: Employee health and safety, working conditions, human rights, career development

Ethics: Corruption prevention, anti-competitive practices, responsible information management

Sustainable Procurement: Supplier environmental and social practices, supplier code of conduct implementation

The assessment methodology is based on international sustainability standards including the Global Reporting Initiative (GRI), the UN Global Compact (UNGC), and ISO 26000. Scores range from 0 to 100, with medals and badges awarded based on performance levels.

What We Do to Help You Succeed

Our team guides you through every stage of the EcoVadis assessment journey:

Preparing Your Sustainability Management System

We help you establish the foundational elements required for a strong assessment result, including:

Sustainability Policies: We assist in drafting and formalizing sustainability commitments across all four EcoVadis themes, using the SMART framework to ensure targets are specific, measurable, achievable, relevant, and time-bound. For example, an Environmental Policy might commit to reducing energy consumption by a defined percentage by a target year, while an Ethics Policy might target anti-corruption training for 100% of employees.

Document Collection Systems: EcoVadis uses an evidence-based approach. We help you establish structured systems to collect and manage the supporting documentation required, including policies, certificates, risk assessments, and performance reports.

Key Stakeholder Coordination: Effective assessments require involvement from multiple departments. We facilitate coordination across Quality, HR, Legal, EHS, Operations, and Purchasing to streamline data collection and ensure completeness.

Metrics Tracking and Reporting: We help you identify and track key sustainability metrics, ensuring your reporting meets EcoVadis requirements for data covering at least 12 consecutive months from the last two calendar years.

Bunzl Supplier Code of Conduct Compliance

Bunzl plc, a major global distributor serving healthcare and other sectors, operates a comprehensive Ethical Sourcing Policy and Supplier Code of Conduct that applies to all suppliers worldwide. Compliance with Bunzl's standards is a prerequisite for maintaining a trading relationship.

Key Requirements of the Bunzl Supplier Code

The Bunzl Supplier Code of Conduct establishes expectations across several critical areas:

Labour and Human Rights: Compliance with International Labour Organization (ILO) or Ethical Trading Initiative minimum requirements, including prohibitions on child labour, forced labour (including slavery and human trafficking), unfair wages and working hours, discrimination, and denial of freedom of association.

Health and Safety: Adequate machine guarding, warning labels, safe operating procedures, protection from hazardous materials, and provision of personal protective equipment.

Environment: Environmental responsibility in manufacturing and sourcing practices.

Ethics: Compliance with laws relating to fraud, anti-bribery and corruption, competition, and antitrust. Suppliers must act honestly and follow fair competition principles.

Management Systems: Appropriate controls and systems to ensure ongoing compliance.

Risk-Based Assessment and Auditing

Bunzl takes a risk-based approach to supplier evaluation and auditing. Suppliers are categorized based on risk assessment considering factors such as:

Country risk level (countries with elevated modern slavery and bribery risks require enhanced scrutiny)

Product risk sector

Spend volume with Bunzl

Suppliers categorized as high-risk will be assessed and/or audited on social risks at the facilities used for manufacturing Bunzl products. Audits may be conducted by Bunzl's own teams or through third-party auditors. The Bunzl Global Supply Chain Committee oversees the effectiveness of the audit programme, with regular reporting to the Group Sustainability Committee and the Bunzl plc Board of Directors.

Corrective Action and Remediation

Where nonconformities are identified during assessment or audit, suppliers are given a defined period to achieve full compliance. Bunzl works closely with suppliers through remediation efforts. For serious breaches or failure to make sufficient progress, relationships may be suspended or terminated. Bunzl has zero tolerance for unacceptable practices including child labour, forced or bonded labour, physical abuse, and non-compliance with anti-bribery legislation.

Other Customer-Specific Codes of Conduct

Beyond EcoVadis and Bunzl, we support compliance with any customer-specific Code of Conduct requirements, including those from:

Global healthcare distributors and group purchasing organizations
