The Importance of UDI in Global Medical Device Regulation

Unique Device Identification (UDI) has become a cornerstone of medical device regulation worldwide. From the EU to the USA, Saudi Arabia to Australia, regulators are implementing UDI systems to enhance traceability, improve post-market surveillance, and strengthen patient safety.

Unique Device Identification (UDI) has become a cornerstone of medical device regulation worldwide. From the EU to the USA, Saudi Arabia to Australia, regulators are implementing UDI systems to enhance traceability, improve post-market surveillance, and strengthen patient safety.

What is UDI?

A UDI is a unique numeric or alphanumeric code assigned to a medical device. It consists of two parts:

UDI-DI (Device Identifier): Identifies the device model and manufacturer

UDI-PI (Production Identifier): Identifies production-specific information such as lot number, serial number, expiration date, and manufacturing date

Global UDI Requirements

European Union: Under MDR, manufacturers must assign UDI to all devices and register them in EUDAMED. UDI must appear on labels and, for certain devices, on the device itself.

United States: FDA requires UDI for most medical devices, with compliance dates phased in by device class. UDI data is submitted to the Global UDI Database (GUDID).

Saudi Arabia: SFDA requires UDI on device labels and registration of UDI data in the GHAD system.

Australia: TGA requires UDI for certain devices, with requirements being phased in.

China: NMPA has implemented UDI requirements for certain device categories.

Benefits of UDI

Enhanced Traceability: UDI enables precise tracking of devices through the supply chain.

Improved Post-Market Surveillance: Regulators can more quickly identify and respond to safety issues.

Streamlined Recalls: UDI facilitates targeted recalls, reducing disruption.

Reduced Errors: UDI helps prevent misidentification of devices in clinical settings.

Compliance Considerations

Manufacturers must:

Assign UDI to each device model and production unit

Ensure UDI is printed on labels and, where required, on the device

Submit UDI data to relevant regulatory databases

Maintain UDI records and update them as necessary

Integrate UDI into their quality management system

At Veritas Quality Solutions, we help manufacturers implement UDI requirements across multiple jurisdictions, ensuring compliance with labeling, registration, and data submission obligations.
