What is EcoVadis?
EcoVadis is a sustainability rating platform that evaluates companies across four themes:
Environment: Energy, emissions, waste, materials, and biodiversity
Labor & Human Rights: Health and safety, working conditions, human rights, and career management
Ethics: Corruption, anti-competitive practices, and responsible information management
Sustainable Procurement: Supplier environmental and social practices
Scores range from 0 to 100, with medals (Bronze, Silver, Gold, Platinum) awarded based on performance thresholds.
Why It Matters for Medical Device Suppliers
Healthcare distributors, OEMs, and group purchasing organizations now integrate EcoVadis scores into supplier qualification and tender evaluations. A strong score can differentiate you in competitive processes, while a low score may jeopardize existing business relationships.
How to Prepare
1. Establish Policies: EcoVadis requires documented policies across all four themes. Policies should include measurable commitments using the SMART framework (Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, Time-bound).
2. Collect Evidence: The assessment is evidence-based. You will need to upload supporting documents including policies, certificates (ISO 14001, ISO 45001), risk assessments, training records, and performance reports.
3. Track Metrics: Quantitative data is essential, particularly for the Environment theme. Energy consumption, water use, waste generation, and GHG emissions should be tracked for at least 12 consecutive months.
4. Coordinate Across Departments: A successful assessment requires input from Quality, HR, Legal, EHS, Operations, and Procurement. Assigning a central coordinator ensures completeness and consistency.
5. Consider a Mock Assessment: Reviewing your documentation against EcoVadis criteria before submission helps identify gaps and improve your score.
